Bald Head Island---So Much Fun!!
Chris, Wesley and I spent 8 nights in Bald Head Island in September. It was one of the best vacations Chris and I have ever had...of course it was wonderful because Wesley was with us but it was truly relaxing and an overall perfect week. The weather couldn't have been more pleasant; warm but not too hot during the day and cool at night. Nothing better than jeans and flip flops at the beach...maybe a sweatshirt on a night or too.
Our house was on the South side of the island a couple of houses back from the ocean. Bald Head Island is a golf cart only community so it doesn't really matter where you stay because you end up driving the cart to the beach anyway. I suppose if you were oceanfront, you wouldn't do that but there are so many different beach accesses that offer different things that we would hop around all week. One side has a calmer surf, one side would be more protected from the wind, one side would be better for walking (with a stroller) so we would just decide in the morning where we wanted to go. We had access to the Shoals Club which is more or less the Country Club on the island. We'd hang out at the pool, have lunch and a cocktail and let Wesley play in the baby pool. While it is a very quiet island with very little to do, that is the part we like. There are a few restaurants (literally-a few), a few shops, a grocery store, hardware store and several adventure companies. The hospitality is truly Southern and I love that. I stopped counting how many times Wesley was called "Darlin'" or "Precious" with the best southern accents. He got a lot of comments on his hair as well. It already stands straight up and the humidity only made it better!
We couldn't do too much with Wesley but that was also the great part...a lot of beach time, pool time and family time!!!
Here are some of the highlights...
Relaxing!!
We spent a lot of mornings and evenings with Wesley on our porch. Chris and I spent many afternoons out there as well while he took his nap. We had a great view of the ocean and a constant breeze. Our house was really great; plenty of room, great location and pretty view of the sunset.
If we weren't on the porch, we spent most mornings playing with Wesley in the sunny den while we drank coffee. We spoiled him by taking a bunch of new toys with us so he'd have something different each day. In fact he had his own suitcase of toys for the week, the biggest suitcase we own. Here is Wesley with his new "cell phone" chatting with Daddy. I mentioned there are no cars on the island and a ferry transports you back and forth. They tell you to pack as if you are flying--we don't listen very well. We looked like the Griswalds but thought we'd rather be prepared especially since this was our first big trip with Wesley (on an island). We definitely overpacked and will pare it down a bit next year. The porters love us and hate us at the same time...a lot to carry but that equates to a good tip!
